Tea Factory and Plantations near Kandy: Museum, Tasting or Tea Country?
5 min read
“Tea tour from Kandy” can mean three different things: a museum visit in Hantana, a nearby factory and plantation tasting, or a full day towards Nuwara Eliya. The best choice depends on whether you want history, production or landscape. Do not book the longest option merely because it sounds more authentic. For most first-time visitors, the short tea factory and tasting tour by tuk-tuk is the best fit; it costs €3.36.
The closest introduction: Hantana
The Ceylon Tea Museum occupies the former Hantana tea factory, built in 1925, a few kilometres outside Kandy. It displays historic machinery, documents and objects from the tea industry, and a telescope on the top floor looks across Kandy towards the Knuckles and Matale ranges. This is the sensible option for a short stay or a rainy spell: the emphasis is interpretation, not walking through a vast working estate.
Confirm current opening days and admission with the museum before travelling, because older published prices are not a safe basis for planning.
A factory and tasting without losing a day
The guided tea factory and tasting tour by tuk-tuk starts at €3.36. Its description promises a traditional factory and plantation near Kandy, an explanation of processing, a tasting and tuk-tuk travel. The booking page gives three to four hours, while some language versions of the listing say three, so use the time shown on your own booking page.
Choose this when seeing leaf-to-cup production matters more than a mountain road trip. Check the named factory, meeting or pickup point, accessibility inside the working building and whether production is active on your date. A factory can still be educational when machinery is idle, but it is a different visit.
When tea country deserves the whole day
A Nuwara Eliya excursion adds cooler highland scenery and long road travel. It makes sense when tea country itself is the destination. It does not make sense as an add-on to an already full Kandy sightseeing day.
For most first-time visitors with two days in Kandy, we recommend the short factory-and-tasting tour: it gives production context without consuming the day needed for the Temple of the Tooth and central Kandy. Choose Hantana for industrial history; choose Nuwara Eliya for landscape. Compare more food and tea experiences in Kandy.
